A national energy data platform, built with the institution that runs it
The reference system gathers, qualifies and publishes a country's energy data. It runs on our data engine and on open standards, and adapts to the institution's mandate, priority domains and administrative boundaries.
The reference system gives your teams:
An open data catalogue, with a licence and metadata for every dataset
A country map down to sub-prefecture level, with territory sheets and export
An API and map services for partners and researchers
Dated releases and a confidence grade for every published value
Kuma Science designs the platform, operates it and trains your teams, up to the transfer to national infrastructure.
Every domain: solar, hydropower, electricity access, efficiency
Every level: country, region, prefecture, sub-prefecture
Open data and open standards, with no lock-in
Decide by territory, with up-to-date data
The reference map puts each domain’s indicators at the level where projects are decided. Every territory has its sheet, its series and its confidence grade.
With the reference system, you can:
Compare territories with each other and with the national average
Prioritise areas for electrification and investment
Export a territory’s data as CSV or GeoJSON
One data source for the whole sector
The catalogue brings together datasets from the agency, operators and partners. Each dataset can be browsed as a table, filtered and downloaded with its source and licence.
The catalogue lets you:
Find a dataset by theme, source, territory or confidence grade
Cite a dated release in a report or a funding file
See what is ground-measured, satellite-estimated or taken from the literature
Open the data to partners and researchers
Engineering firms, funders and universities access the same data through an API and map services. Nobody retypes figures from one project to the next.
For technical teams:
A documented REST API, with a console to compose requests
WMS and WFS services, a CSW catalogue in DCAT and ISO 19115
Downloads in CSV, JSON, GeoJSON and Parquet
Depending on your role in the project
The reference system is the same. What changes is how it is commissioned and what each party expects from it.
Energy agencies and ministries
Give the country its national reference system
Your institution is mandated to collect, publish and monitor the country's energy data. We set up the tool that fulfils that mandate, in your colours.
Design and launch of the reference system
Operation, updates and data qualification
New domains: renewables, access, efficiency
Staff training and transfer to your infrastructure
How we work together A direct agreement with the institution. A first domain online, then an operations contract.
An electrification or transition programme is steered with reliable, public data. We act as technical operator of the data component of your programmes.
A reference system set up in a beneficiary country
Baselines and monitoring indicators, sourced and dated
Open data to appraise and evaluate projects
Technical assistance to national agencies
How we work together A component of a technical assistance programme, with the beneficiary agency as owner of the reference system.
The national institution directly, a funder within a programme, or an engineering firm that includes it in its assignment. In every case, the national institution remains the owner of the reference system and its data.
How long does it take to put a reference system online?
The first domain takes around two to three months when data already exist. The exact timeline is set at scoping.
Where is the platform hosted?
It can start on our infrastructure and then move to national hosting, under a government domain. The move is an operations task, not a rebuild.
Can we start with a domain other than solar?
Yes. Hydropower, electricity access or energy efficiency are set up the same way.
Which standards does the reference system use?
A DCAT and ISO 19115 catalogue, WMS and WFS maps, CSV, JSON and GeoJSON downloads, and a documented REST API. The components are open source.
